As Assistant Attorney General for former Attorney General Hubert Humphrey III of the state of Minnesota, Jin-Ho Chung acquired daily courtroom experience almost immediately out of law school. During his years of public service he litigated a wide range of cases before a variety of forums, including cases involving child support, public assistance, health care and the revocation of drivers' licenses. He also researched legal issues and reviewed documents in the state's landmark lawsuit against Big Tobacco, which culminated in a multi-billion dollar settlement in favor of Minnesota, the first state in the nation to take action against this industry.

Jin-Ho entered the private sector as an associate in another Chicago law firm, where he wrote numerous legal memoranda, reviewed thousands of documents and helped prepare trial exhibits for a major litigation matter involving false advertising and antitrust issues. He served this firm until it closed its Chicago office, when we hired him immediately, impressed by his early record of success and recommendations from past employers. Sharp, focused and quick to process new information, Jin-Ho says Schuyler Roche's reputation in the legal community for performing quality work in an ethical and professional manner brought us to his attention. The warmth our attorneys demonstrated and the enthusiasm for intellectual engagement he encountered while interviewing here persuaded him to join us.

Jin-Ho considers law an opportunity to serve the public interest whether representing clients in the public or private sector. Law, he says, is a reflection of the society that builds it and the line every member of a community must tow. Because law is the standard by which society protects equality and justice, our lawyers, judges and legislators must ensure that it be a positive reflection of this country and that it serve public and private interest equally. Acting on this philosophy, Jin-Ho has developed a reputation for coalition building within this firm, whether assimilating into an existing team or joining one newly created. In fact, he brings a sense of "teamsmanship" to every encounter, a quality that quickly won him the respect of senior colleagues.

Before attending law school, Jin-Ho worked one summer as an investigator for the Public Defender Service in Washington, D.C., learning firsthand how people below the poverty line live and perceive the law. Meeting with and speaking to clients confronting often dire circumstances taught him humility, he says. Observing their feelings of alienation from society and entrapment by laws they did not understand deepened his resolve to study law. Fueling his interest was the desire to help his father, subject of a string of lawsuits that confused and dogged him for more than ten years. Jin-Ho acted as a liaison between his father and legal counsel, an experience that dramatized for him the difficulties lay people encounter when confronting the intricacies and procedures of the law. This background benefits his clients today through the care he takes to explain legal complexities. Experience, he says, has led him to believe it is important to decipher what clients mean, not just listen to what they say.

Bilingual, Jin-Ho speaks Korean.

In having begun his practice representing state agencies for the Minnesota Attorney General's Office, Jin-Ho acquired a wide range of experience in litigation and client counseling, which well prepared him for private practice at Schuyler Roche serving securities and commodities brokers, brokerage offices and corporate clients involved in commercial and employment litigation. Jin-Ho, who enjoys speaking in court and developing legal strategies and arguments, also excels in dispute and conflict resolution, an impressive quality in such a young attorney.

Recently he assisted members of our firm in handling two major arbitration claims. Each case involved charges of employee raiding against a competitor of one of our clients. Jin-Ho conducted discovery, drafted pleadings (including motions to compel and a response to a motion for summary judgment), interviewed witnesses and prepared detailed outlines for the direct- and cross-examination of witnesses. Schuyler Roche settled both cases favorably.

In addition, Jin-Ho has

  • assisted on a number of claims in state court and in arbitration to obtain injunctive relief against employees who violated the terms of their restrictive covenants
  • generated detailed trial outlines and strategy memoranda in preparation for arbitration.

During his service in the public sector, Jin-Ho received praise from clients for his accessibility, friendliness and willingness to devote the necessary time to understand their problems and respond to their concerns. Most notably, he:

  • represented the State of Minnesota in defending the constitutionality of its child support administrative system
  • was second chair in defending the constitutionality of Minnesota's public assistance program
  • won 37 of 41 state court hearings to suspend or revoke drivers' licenses of motorists charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Upon joining the private sector, Jin-Ho has:

  • assisted in the favorable settlement of a major dispute between two Fortune 500 companies involving false advertising and antitrust charges
  • helped obtain a favorable settlement of two major arbitration claims against a Wall Street company regarding national recruitment matters and restrictive covenants.
